Largest state funding appropriation in college history advances workforce innovation and honors Hank Aaron’s enduring legacy during ATC’s 60th anniversary
ATLANTA, GA, UNITED STATES, August 12, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — Atlanta Technical College marked a defining moment in its 60-year history Tuesday, breaking ground on the nearly $30 million renovation and expansion of the Henry Louis “Hank” Aaron Academic Complex on Tuesday, Aug. 11.
Nearly 100 guests, including college leaders, elected officials, students, community partners and supporters, joined the ceremony on the Atlanta Technical College campus. The event celebrated the largest single state funding investment in the college’s history and a major step forward for workforce development, student success and economic growth across metro Atlanta.
“For 60 years, Atlanta Technical College has helped students turn their talent, determination and ambition into meaningful careers,” said Atlanta Technical College President Dr. Victoria Seals. “Today, we are building upon that legacy with a bold investment in the people, programs and technologies that will shape our region’s future. This complex will be more than a building. It will be a place where innovation comes to life, students discover new possibilities and employers connect with the highly skilled talent they need to grow.”
According to college leaders, the Henry Louis “Hank” Aaron Academic Complex will be reimagined as a state-of-the-art instructional and student services hub designed to meet the evolving needs of learners, employers and Georgia’s rapidly changing economy.
In addition to serving as a new, one-stop student service center, the new facilities will support hands-on instruction, curriculum innovation, apprenticeships and industry collaboration across high-demand fields, including artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing, cybersecurity, film and video technology, media and graphic design production, post-production media technologies and future music production programming.
Technical College System of Georgia Commissioner Greg Dozier said the project reflects the state’s commitment to building a skilled workforce capable of supporting Georgia’s continued economic growth.
“Georgia’s economic success begins with a workforce prepared to meet opportunity with skill, confidence and purpose,” Dozier said. “This historic investment gives Atlanta Technical College the facilities and resources needed to prepare students for some of the most dynamic and rapidly evolving careers in our state. It also demonstrates what is possible when education, government and industry share a commitment to creating stronger pathways from the classroom to a rewarding career.”
The project, nearly five years in the making, also honors the enduring legacy of baseball legend, humanitarian and longtime Atlanta Technical College supporter Henry Louis “Hank” Aaron. His name has become synonymous with perseverance, excellence and expanding opportunity for others.
“My husband believed deeply in the power of education and creating opportunities for others,” said Billye Aaron, who spoke during the program. “It is especially meaningful to see this building continue to bear Hank’s name while preparing students for careers that will shape the future. This renovation and expansion ensures his legacy will continue inspiring young people to dream bigger and work harder to achieve more.”
Atlanta Braves Vice President of Community Affairs Danielle Bedasse, who also serves as executive director of the Atlanta Braves Foundation, reflected on Aaron’s far-reaching impact and the significance of connecting his legacy to future generations. “He believed in education, service and giving people the opportunity to reach their full potential,” said Bedasse. “The Atlanta Braves are proud to celebrate this important milestone and to see his name carried forward through a complex that will equip students to lead, create and succeed in fields that are driving the future.”
Georgia State Rep. Phil Olaleye said the historic investment reflects years of sustained advocacy and a shared commitment to expanding educational and career opportunities. “This effort has been top of mind for many of us for years because we understand that prioritizing educational opportunity is essential to strengthening our communities and our economy,” Olaleye said. “To see this investment come to fruition is a testament to what we can accomplish when we work across the aisle, remain focused on a shared vision and put students and their futures first.”
During the program, Seals unveiled a rendering of the new Billye Subber Aaron soundstage, that will honor Mrs. Aaron’s philanthropic work and career in media and production. “This is a full-circle moment that honors the extraordinary legacy of both Mr. and Mrs. Aaron in a deeply meaningful way,” Seals said. “Their legacy is not simply what they leave behind. It lives in the people they inspire, the opportunities they create and the generations they propel forward.”
